What is a Butterfly Valve?

A butterfly valve is a type of valve commonly used in industrial applications to regulate or control the flow of fluids. It consists of a disc, positioned inside the valve body, that rotates a quarter turn (90°) around a stem.

One of the notable characteristics of a butterfly valve is its small and compact face, making it lightweight and convenient to install and remove.

Butterfly valves are versatile and can be employed for two main purposes: throttling, which involves regulating the flow volumes at an intermediate travel, or full-on and full-off flow control.

Parts of a Butterfly Valve

Resilient Butterfly Valve
Contains a flexible rubber seat and has a working pressure of 232 PSI.

High-Performance Butterfly Valve
Normally double eccentric in design and has a working pressure of up to 725 PSI

Tripple Eccentric Butterfly Valve
An advanced type of butterfly valve that has three offset components: the disc, the shaft, and the seat. This design eliminates rubbing and friction during operation, resulting in improved sealing performance and durability. Used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Has a working pressure of 1450 PSI

End Connection Types For Butterfly Valves

Wafer Style Butterfly Valves
The wafer style is the default design for butterfly valves. It is generally installed between two flanges and is kept in place using bolts, or studs and nuts, from flange to flange.

Lug Style Butterfly Valves
Lug style butterfly valves have threaded inserts at both sides of the valve body, allowing them to be installed into a system using two sets of bolts and no nuts. They are installed between two flanges using a separate set of bolts for each flange. A setup like this allows either side of the piping system to be disconnected independently of the other side.

Flanged Style Butterfly Valves
Flanged style butterfly valves are similar to lug style valves but with the addition of plain inserts at both sides of the valve. The valve is installed between two flanges using a separate set of studs and nuts for each flange. This setup allows either side of the piping system to be disconnected independently of the other side.
